It is not at all controversial for a Christian to call a local church a communion or part of Communion. Yet, by communion, we refer to a particular ritualized symbolic activity of Christians. We are used to participate in communion and seeing ourselves in communion with Christ and other sincere followers and believers of Christ. We also used to think of a local church as an institution that made significant contributions to our area, village, city, province, and country. We thought that through international mission work, we were engaged in changing the world for better.
This perception of who we are as a local church is no longer valid. Our influence (what little we might had) is almost non-existent in our locality albeit social, economical, cultural and spiritual matters. Major Christian celebrations like Easter and Christmas are usurped as excuses for exaggerated economic excess days void of spiritual meaning. More and more Christians are now excusing themselves from worship and devotions on these high holy days in order to participate in secular celebrations.
Witnessing the continual demise of Christianity in the world, many dedicated Christians now call themselves as followers, believers, or disciples of Christ to specify their faith. Some Christians now say out loud that they believe in God, but they no longer associate themselves with the institution of the Church. Some lapsed Christians say they are spiritual, not religious. Others, seeing the Church in state of corruption, are trusting their own rational or intuitive thoughts to guide them in life.
When the world is so dark, why is it necessary to be a Christian today? Why should I remain a Presbyterian Christian in Canada when I ought to focus on simply being a follower, believer or disciple of Christ? We will discuss in depth to see if indeed we ought to see ourselves in a different light if we are to be true to the Gospel of Christ.
Knowing that the world has changed, that the Church of Jesus Christ is in decline in membership especially in Canada, and that there seems to be no appetite for anything Christian in Canada, we invite you to join us in explorations of living the life of faith, hope and love as those who belong to Christ.
On this site, we will examine our past and present to build hope for future.
